operation dynamo was estimated to rescue a maximum of 45,000 soldiers and saved more than 338,000 men.
extra facts: A significant portion of the British army forces were represented by the BEF the rescued personnel would go on to form the corp of the rebuilt army which would carry on the fights. If they had not been evacuated it was feared that Germany could have invaded and possibly even defeated England. The evacuation at Dunkirk remains a remarkable turning point in WWII history by land, sea and air. the sacrifice of the 40000 French soldiers who stayed behind fighting to the end to cover the retreat and buy enough time for the troops to be evacuated.
