Instead of surrendering, Chiang Kai-Shek moved the capital of China to Chongqing. This surprised the Japanese soldiers and generals, as well as making them greatly angry… causing them to begin The Rape of Nanking on December 13th.
- 2 effects: Soldiers ravaged through the streets, killing Chinese men, women and children without any excuse. Thousands of women including young girls were raped by Japanese soldiers throughout the city. Thousands of men were buried alive, beheaded or doused with gasoline and burned alive. More than 300,000 lives were taken during the six-week period.
