The cell was first discovered and named by Robert Hooke in 1665. It was named after its structure and how it looks like a small room or cellula (a small room or compartment). Robert Hooke was a natural philosopher, an architect and a polymath. Robert became the Surveyor to the City of London after The Great Fire of 1666
