jan 1, 1987 - Concerned Citizen's of Old Quindaro Save Quindaro Ruins from Landfill.

Description:

In response to the attempt by Browning Ferris Industries, the African Methodist Episcopal Church 5th District, and the then city of Kansas City Kansas to cover the 1857 Quindaro Ruins with a landfill, Mr. Jesse Hope III answered by creating the Concerned Citizens of Old Quindaro (CCOQ) which helped rally the community. The CCOQ called out as many as 900 supporters, overflowing the city hall at zoning hearings. The CCOQ's efforts triggered a Cultural Resources Management archeological excavation which proved the town had lived when opponents claimed it never existed. After Hope withstood two harrowing years of city and church push back, the CCOQ stopped the landfill from being built over the town. Hope is today buried in the Old Quindaro Cemetery next to his mother overlooking the Missouri river.
