Description:
Pius IX gave this solemn definition in the encyclical, "Ineffabilis Deus". He initially wished for this and the "Syllabus of Errors" to be the same document, so that the dogma would be defined in the same encyclical as the errors of liberalism were condemned. This however did not turn out to be the case.
