Description:
Opened to address the encroachments on papal authority, and the errors of modern philosophy concerning matters of Faith.
Touched on matters of natural theology, the capabilities and limitations of human reason, divine revelation, and the authority of the Church's magisterium. Dogmatically defined Papal Infallibility.
Though discussion on the nature of the Church was set to continue, the Council was forced to adjourn early in 1870 due to the invasion of the Papal States.
