may 10, 1936 - Niceto Alcala Zamora ousted as president and replaced with Manuel Azana
Description:
When the Cortes met in April of 1936, they decided it would be best if they removed Niceto Alcala Zamora from the presidency and reward it to somebody else. Manuel Azana was then elected president of the republic, and Quiroga succeeded him as prime minister. When Azana was elected, he felt lethargic and apathetic because he felt as if there was a lot of disorder in Spain, but he felt that there was no way to counter what was going on. He knew that there was about to be a sort of revolution happening, but he had no clue how to stop it, so his plan was to make everything as secure as he could. He told the minister of finance to take the money to wherever he thought it would be the safest, and then moved to Barcelona with the rest of the republic. When Barcelona fell to the rebels on 26 January 1939, Azana fled to France.
