apr 14, 1931 - Establishment of the Second Republic
Description:
On April 12th, Spain held local elections throughout all of the municipalities of Spain to elect 80,472 councilors. This was perceived as a direct vote on the monarchy of King Alfonso XIII. After this election, the second Spanish republic was established. This was because the republicans won the elections in a landslide. Because of this, King Alfonso had to go into exile. This led to a provisional government under the young republic, which was led by Niceto Alcala- Zamora. This is important to the timeline because it was the first changing of the guard of the government that can be identified as a contributing factor to the eventual civil war.
