On February 14, 2018, Nikolas Cruz opened fire on former classmates after he entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. He used a legally purchased AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a backpack full of magazines loaded with bullets.
Around 2:19 p.m. the former student arrived at the school and by the time a staff member saw him and warned the school for a lockdown he had already started shooting.
He had killed a total of 17 people and injured another 17 people.
On March 7, 2018, a jury ruled Cruz guilty of 34 charges, including 17 counts of first-degree murder and 17 counts of attempted first-degree murder.
After the shooting, students who attended Stoneman Douglas led a movement to reform laws to reduce gun violence in America.
Their efforts eventually became the March for Our Lives, which has led to the hosting of rallies and the creation of capaigns to change gun-related laws across our country.
