sep 18, 1850 - Fugitive Slave Act

Description:

"The fugitive slave act was devastating to northerners, abolitionists of slavery, and slaves who wanted to be free; however slavery supporters loved this law. It stated that any one assisting a slave escape to the north would face severe punishment. It also stated that any slave (no matter where in the country) could be returned to its master. It was included in the compromise of 1850, and was made law on September 18, 1850. It led to the civil war by angering anti-slavery supporters by limiting their ability to aid runaway slaves, and it made it impossible for run-away slaves to be safe anywhere in the country"(Preceden.com).
