Mr. Owens moved to the Northeast area of Kansas City Kansas from the rural south starting school at Sumner High School. Throughout his lifetime, he has been a community leader, statesman, civil activist, business professional and humanitarian. He has received the NAACP Civil Rights award, the Friends of Yates Black Man of Distinction award, the United Way Volunteer of the Year Award and most recently the Historian of the Year award from the Wyandotte County Historical Museum and Society for his work in promoting education about Ethnic groups in Kansas City, Kansas.
