sep 1, 1971 - Huron Indian Cemetery on National Register of Historic Sites

Description:

Huron Indian Cemetery is placed on the National Register of Historic Sites. The burial place for the dozens of Wyandot's who died in the first winter here in 1843 and many other Indian people has seen conflict over its lifetime. The object of racial hatred, numerous attempts to close or build over the site were defeated, most notably by the Connelly sisters who for two years built a wooden shed over their Wyandot relatives burials and refused to allow harm to come to the cemetery. Notably, Harry Martin Trowbridge, Wyandotte County Avocational Archeologist joined the Wyandot's and fought to save the cemetery.
