jan 1, 1910 - John Brown Statue

Description:

In 1910, the John Brown monument erected was in defiance to newly elected Kansas City, Kansas Mayor James E. Porter's decision to terminate all African American police officers from the force, except for one. Community leaders, citizens, and others donated funds to have the statue created. Once completed, the statue would stand tall for generations on the property of Western University. The monument was the first statue of its kind raised in the United States.
