jan 1, 1869 - Allen Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church

Description:

Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church is the oldest African American church in Quindaro. The church was founded and lead by pastor Skylar Washington, in 1869. The original facility was made of logs and located at the corner of J and 8th Street near present-day 33rd and Sewell. Later, the church purchased a stone building at 27th and Sewell that belonged to the Quindaro Congregational Church. This structure was destroyed by a tornado, causing the congregation to meet at an adjacent stone house. In 1893, at the Congregational Church location, a new frame church was constructed, and later, in 1910, a larger building was erected. This building was destroyed by fire during 1911 or 1912. The current location of Allen Chapel A.M.E. at 3421 N. 29th Street, built-in 1914, is the sixth facility to house the congregation.
