Description:
- Following defection of General Dumouriuz to the Austrians
- Began as a nine man committee with few intrinsic powers. It has to oversee the war effort and national security. Weekly reports to the Convention
- By September it increased to 12 man membership. It rarely changed it's membership. Convention passed several measures that increased powers of CPS - Law of suspects
- General maximum
- Eradicated political opponents. Several politica opponents guillotined between October and December 1793
- Law of Frumaire formalised the role of the CPS.
