mar 1, 1793 - Revolt in the Vendee

Description:

- Vendee = location of the largest counterrevolutionary uprisings
- The peasants of the Vendee were better off, had better relationships with their nobles and were staunchly Catholic
- Vendeans responded badly to the Civil Constitution of the Clergy and other perceived attacks on the church
- Execution of Louis and introductory of conscription tipped the Vendee into counterrevolution. By April 1793 Vendeans formed the "Catholic and Royal army" of 80,000 men and boys
- By late 1793 Vendeans had been defeated, this was followed by a period of several years of terror on the Vendee
