jan 1, 1906 - KU Medical Center
Description:
The KU Medical Center was founded in 1906 when Dr. Simeon Bell (May 13, 1820 – January 16, 1913) donated the land and cash totaling more than $100,000 to establish the original dedicated to his wife, the Eleanor Taylor Bell Hospital. The original site was on Southwest Boulevard and 7th Street. A school of nursing was established in 1906.
The medical school lacked clinical facilities and political support in Lawrence but school had an impressive corps of talented physician-educators that pushed the University of Kansas to keep the medical school in Kansas City, Kansas after a strong move to place in Topeka. Eventually the original building was used for a nursing college.
