jan 1, 1871 - The Sauer Castle

Description:

The Sauer Castle was built in 1871 for Anton Sauer with Florentine Architecture influences by Asa Beebe Cross. It is located on the Shawnee Indian trail that was part of the old Santa Fe Trail. The castle still stands on 935 Shawnee Road. The tower served Sauer’s interests in astronomy as he enjoyed telescopes. The tower has a great view of the Kaw River which reminded Mr. Sauer of the Danube River in Vienna, from where he immigrated. The Castle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places but is in danger of destruction through deterioration and neglect.
