may 30, 1903 - Flood of 1903

Description:

The flood of May 30, 1903 killed 58 people mostly in Topeka and destroyed six of seven railway bridges in the Kansas City area. The Armourdale meat packing area had 16,000 people lose their homes. Argentine was also heavily damaged. The schoolhouses of Armstrong, Riverview and Wyandotte were full of refugees.

1903 Floods: In the 1903 disaster, 3,000 citizens out of the total population of 7,000 were rendered homeless. From Spear Avenue to the bluffs in the east the Kaw River was one mile wide. Water ran ten feet deep in parts of Argentine. A smaller flood in 1904 resulted in flood waters from one to ten feet deep. The 1908 flood, which was an oddity in that it was really two successive floods, achieved third place ranking behind the floods of 1951 and 1903 in terms of property damage to the Argentine and Turner communities.
