jan 1, 1943 - Redbrick Universities

Description:

The term "red brick" or "redbrick" was first coined by Edgar Allison Peers, a professor of Spanish at the University of Liverpool, to describe the civic universities, while using the pseudonym "Bruce Truscot" in his 1943 book "Redbrick University." A number of specialist institutions gained independence and became fully fledged universities in their own right, and these universities got their "red brick" label from the style of brickwork common at the time. While the Victoria Building at the University of Liverpool was the inspiration behind the term, it was the University of Birmingham that was first of the red brick universities to receive its Royal Charter (in order to gain independence). The original six redbrick universities are University of Birmingham, University of Bristol, University of Leeds, University of Liverpool, University of Manchester, and University of Sheffield (Ellett; "Red Brick").
