Jazz Band Director Marlin Cooper was hired and quickly gains national and international prominence with the KCKCC Jazz Orchestra. Many fine musicians have passed through the program and went on to remarkable careers most notably saxophonist Bobby Watson. In 1985 the Jazz Orchestra performed at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, and also in Mexico City in 1990.
