African Methodist Episcopal Church (A.M.E.) was founded out of the Methodist Episcopal Church by Richard Allen in 1816 in Philadelphia. Allen was a Delaware slave. There was a First Methodist Episcopal Church South in Wyandott City and a First Methodist Episcopal Church North in Quindaro. John and Lucy Armstrong were strong advocates of the A.M.E. The Allen Chapel was the sixth building for the A.M.E. congregation. It was completed in 1869 and is located on 3421 North 29th St.
