Description:

John Armstrong (1813-1852) was a lawyer for the Wyandot tribe in Ohio who married Lucy Bigelow (Armstrong) a missionary to the Wyandot in Ohio. In Ohio, the Wyandot tribes had a number of prominent houses and communal structures such as a gristmill, a jail, brick encased springs, and church and council house. The homes of Armstrong and Walker are still standing and occupied today in North Sandusky, Ohio. The Armstrongs moved west with the Wyandot Tribe and build the first log cabin in p.d. WyCo on 5th and Freeman in 1843. In 1844 John Armstrong opened the first school where he taught science and music in the Wyandot language. In 1845 he procured the first U.S. Post Office. In 1845 he was licensed to preach and held church services for the Delaware, Kickapoo, Shawnee and Wyandot tribes. He was a leader in the Order of the Sons of Temperance at a time when alcoholism was rampant in the tribe. He and his wife strongly supported formation of the African Methodist Episcopal Church for which they were persecuted. In 1846 he built a new residence on 5th and Jersey. There is a postcard picture of this home which was the oldest home in WyCo until 2002 when it was torn down for area development. In 1851-52 he revised the Wyandot Constitution to be anti-slavery. In 1852 he died from typhoid fever while on business in Ohio.
