jul 26, 1853 - Walker was elected Provisional Governor

Description:

On July 26, 1853 Walker was elected Provisional Governor of the Provisional Nebraska Territory which included the area that is now the state of Kansas. The building in which this convention was held was a little one-story frame building built and used for a school house and a Council House. It stood on what is now the center of Nebraska Avenue and Fourth Street in Wyandott City (KCK). Ironically, the group that elected him were Wyandot Natives, white traders, and outside interests who wanted to preempt the federal government organization of the territory and to benefit from the settlement of Kansas by Free State white settlers. The also wanted to promote the route for a transcontinental railroad originating in Wyandott City which was the dream of Thomas Hart Benton, a Democrat Senator from the state of Missouri.
