dec 11, 1816 - Indiana Joins the Union
Description:
James Madison and Congress turned Indiana into its own state. The Indiana area came from part of the Indiana Territory (what is modern day Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, parts of Minnesota, and Indiana) that was taken from the older Northwest Territory. The territory's congressional representative of the time, Jonathan Jennings, wanted to speed up Indiana's admission as a state, but the War of 1812 postponed it. On May 13th of 1816, Congress passed an enabling act that was later finalized and approved one last time the next month. Indiana was introduced as a free state.
