jan 1, 1774 - A Summary View of the
Rights of British America
Description:
A pamphlet written by Thomas Jefferson for Virginian delegates to the First Continental Congress. He wrote a list of grievances against the English government, targeting the Intolerable Acts in particular. He asserted that Parliament lacked the right to govern the colonies, which were each granted the right to self-government from their foundation. He said that Americans possessed this as a natural right, not because the king bestowed it upon them. He assured the delegates that the American people were still loyal to the king, but asked that the colonies be treated as equals to Great Britain. The document helped to cement Jefferson as an adept writer.
