may 30, 1765 - Virginia Stamp Act Resolutions

Description:

A set of resolutions passed by the Virginia House of Burgesses in response to the passage of the Stamp Act. The House claimed that only they had the right to tax the colonists of Virginia, not Parliament, as had been British tradition. They were proposed by Patrick Henry, who gave a fiery speech on May 29 supporting their passage. The next day, the assembly voted on the first five resolutions (there were seven in total). The first four were passed, with the fifth being passed but repealed on the second day of debates on account of being too radical. Colonial newspapers published all seven, however.
