jan 1, 1904 - The History of the Standard Oil Company

Description:

A book written by muckraker Ida Tarbell. Her father was an employee of Standard Oil, meaning that she got to witness firsthand what the company was up to. In her book, she writes about Standard Oil's engagement in the practice of horizontal integration, in which a company buys up all of its competition to set unfair rates. She also revelas that Standard Oil was in violation of the 1890 Sherman Antitrust Act. The book helped to draw attention to the immoral and illegal practices of the company, which landed it in a Supreme Court case in 1911 that brought about Standard Oil's dissolution.
