jan 1, 1637 - New Haven Colony founded

Description:

The unofficial colony of New Haven (shown in yellow) was founded by John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton. They were English emigrants who wanted an incredibly strong connection between church and state, the polar opposite of Rhode Island. The colony was riddled with problems, chief among them being the lack of an official charter. Their strong ties to the church also alienated many members of the colony. Davenport, Eaton, and the other founders were merchants who wanted to use to the land to turn a profit, but were unsuccessful in their agricultural ventures there. Starting in 1662, New Haven towns began surrendering their control to Connecticut, and in 1664 the colony was officially subsumed into Connecticut.
