jul 22, 1864 - Battle of Atlanta
Description:
By this point, the Union has a clear dominance in the war, and has reached far into the Deep South. William Tecumseh Sherman, a general of the North, faces off against Confederate forces to the north of Atlanta, and ultimately prevails, capturing Atlanta. This battle is important because Atlanta is a major converging point of the supply lines for the Confederate army, and by taking control and later burning Atlanta to the ground, Union forces strike a powerful blow to the South. This battle also facilitates the March to the Sea, one of the ending campaigns of the War.
