jul 2, 1890 - Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890
Description:
A federal law that primarily prohibits monopolies. It was written by Ohio Republican Senator John Sherman, and grants the federal government the authority to block mergers that would create monopolies, or dissolve existing ones into smaller companies. It was not enforced too strongly when it was passed, but was used frequently under Theodore Roosevelt's administration to break up large corporations like Standard Oil.
