Even though Edward III should be king, he was already king of England and they didn't want his mother Isabella, Philip VI became ruler. Philip, enthusiastic about his rulership claimed full jurisdiction over aquitaine. This was seen as a massive violation of the treaty by Edward. Moreover he claimed he should be the heir of the throne.
