The most powerful nobles were able to gain allegiance of warriors. they swore their loyalty as a Vassal (meaning servant to a powerful individual) in return for their loyalty, aid and military service the lord promised him a apiece of land or fief (early middle ages were cash poor). Historiens called this tie of loyality for a piece of land instead of for an abstract state, Feudalism
