dec 21, 1864 - William T. Sherman captured Savannah, Georgia on this date. Sherman was one of the largest advocates for total war. As Sherman marched through Georgia, he destroyed railroads, plantations, etc to hurt the South morale and bring the Union a step closer to winning the war.
