Description:
it commanded one of the best harbours on the north african coast and was surrounded by fertile farmland. They engaged in war with the Etruscans and the Greek cities of southern italy. Carthage had one of the biggest navies and were wealthy enough to hire mercenaries. At the end of a long string of wars Carthaginianshad created and defended a mercantile empire that stretched from western sicily to western end of the mediteranian.
