sep 24, 1789 - Judiciary Act of 1789

Description:

A law passed by Congress establishing the federal judicial branch, which was only generally explained in the Constitution. It appointed one court and one judge per district. It allowed for six justices along with the Chief Justice as members of the Supreme Court. The Court was given jurisdiction over all lawsuits, as well as cases between states, or between a state and the federal government. It established circuit courts, which belonged between district courts and the Supreme Court in the judicial hierarchy.
