apr 3, 1823 - Pedro I appoints British admiral Thomas Cochrane to take command of the Brazilian fleet, and eventually defeated the Portuguese at Bahia by luring them away to the smaller town of Maranhão and surprise attacking them. Then they chased the Portuguese down while they were fleeing back to Portugal.
