It turns out in the case of Fahrenheit these temperatures are based off of a Mercury and the man who discovered this was Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit. So he was the one who decided the baseline based off of this thermometer. While I was researching Farenheit a even more perplexing question struck me. if 10 is twice as much as five why isn't 10 degrees twice as hot as five degrees.
