aug 20, 1960 - Senegal Independence
Description:
Senegal is an example of French decolonization where the country's leader (in this case, Leopold Senghor) wanted to maintain their economic dependence/ties with France. The playing out of Senegalese independence showed first and foremost that not all African leaders felt that colonization was bad. Senghor noted France's relationship with Senegal to be like one of a parent and child. It is important that the example of Senegal is not lost, because it disrupts the prevailing notion of a radical wave of independence where all leaders sought to join a third world alliance of some sort, etc. etc. This nuance is key to understanding the political forces and economic realities in the region at the time.
