jun 30, 1966 - National Organization for Women (NOW) founded

Description:

Noted as being the "NAACP for women," NOW was founded in 1966. NOW was a primarily political and legislative movement, and, consequently, its members were predominantly straight, white, and middle-class women. It used legislative efforts as its primary mode of change making. The issues it focused on often centered around workplace equality, equal pay, movement of women from the private to the public sphere, etc. These were issues that did not resonate very deeply with women of color and low-income women, who had been in the workplace for a long time and were more worried about the survival of their communities. NOW did not create adequate space for notions of intersectionality, and so many movements for other women were formed in its aftermath.
