jun 20, 1991 - Receives PhD
Description:
After studying at both Harvard and the University of Texas, Austin, he transferred to the University of Columbia for his PhD in astrophysics. While getting this degree he wrote his first book and studied the composition and velocity of stars in the center of spiral galaxies. After graduating, he got an interview, and for the first time he could think of, there was a black person on television being interviewed about something as an expert, and not about being black. Graduation meant that there were now seven black astrophysicists in the US out of the four-thousand in total (Mead, 2017).
