jan 1, 1968 - National Black Theater established

Description:

The National Black Theatre was established by Barbara Ann Teer in Harlem, NY. Teer was interested in the question of how theatre and the arts could be used as a source of power to destroy black oppression. Her conception of theater painted artists as natural entrepreneurs and leaders that can transform their communities.

The early shows (called "revivals") at the theater were ritual based. They were crafted with the intention of ridding black people of the pain and waste in their lives. The shows also reconnected people with Yoruba principles. Ultimately, this new theatrical art form—"action arts"—worked against Western notions of theater.

When the theater was not putting on shows, it held entreprenurial classes to teach community members how to start and sustain their own businesses.
