Description:

John White returned to Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina to discover that all the inhabitants had mysteriously disappeared. The word "Croaton" was found inscribed on a nearby tree. To this day, it is still unknown what became of them, though it remains the most likely possibility that they left to live with Native Americans.
