may 10, 1775 - Capture of Fort Ticonderoga
Description:
The Green Mountain Boys led by Ethan Allen, along with a small force of American militiamen led by Benedict Arnold, captured British Fort Ticonderoga in northern NY, a vital communications and supply point connecting Canada with New York. It also had lots of guns and ammunition for the Patriots to use. They attacked at night, while the British were asleep and off-guard, causing them to surrender with practically no resistance. Henry Knox (future Secretary of War under George Washington) would later take these weapons and use oxen to drag them through the snow all the way to Boston.
