jul 7, 1937 - Peele Commission

Description:

The peele Commission was the product of a British committee coming to Palestine to investigate the problem of the Jewish-Arab Conflict. Their solution was to split up the land based on population. The Jews saw this as something that was not completely fair, but at least they would have some land. They wanted to have something over nothing. Overall, this was seen as good by the Jews. The Arabs, however, saw this as completely unfair. They saw that they were in the land first, and they had the majority population. In their eyes, the land was fundamentally theirs and giving any part of it up would be acknowledging that the land is not theirs. It would be letting the Jews steal their land. This was not okay, they got the right for the land from the Hussein-Mcmahon agreement and that was the end of the story.
This is an important event in Zionist history because it shows that Jews were willing to go to all lengths to get some land. This is also laying down the foundations for the partition plan of 1947. This did, however, lay the foundations for Jews to be frustrated with the British. They see now that the British are starting to lean more to the Arab side and be more partial to the Arabs. The Jews started to see the British as the enemy.
