The Jews created the Haganah to protect themselves from Arab riots because they didn’t feel that they could depend on the British to properly protect them. The Arabs were frustrated with the formation of the Haganah because it combatted their efforts to drive Jews out of the land and discourage them from becoming permanent settlers.
This is an important event in Zionist History because it was one of the first Jewish organized efforts in Palestine. Initially, the Haganah was comprised of young and untrained farmers and peasants. After the Arab Riots of 1929, the Haganah went from an untrained militia with few supplies and weapons to a capable underground army.
