nov 2, 1917 - Balfour Declaration signed

Description:

Chaim Weizmann was able to form relationships with high powered politicians in World War I and therefore was able to try to enact Zionist ideas into law. He was able to get the Balfour declaration signed. This was an official document issued by the British foreign secretary, Lord Arthur Balfour. The document stated that the British would help the Jews establish a Jewish home in Palestine. The Jews saw this as a momentous occasion- there was hope for the Jewish State! 2,000 years of galut finally were going to end. The Arabs were disgusted with this declaration. They felt betrayed by the British. After all they had an agreement for the land of Palestine first through the Hussein-Mcmahon agreement.
This was important in Zionist history because it was the first time that Jews were given an official document that would give them a Jewish state in Palestine. This is the founding document for the creation of the state of Israel and the proof for her legitimacy.
