Description:

A treaty between Great Britain, France, Spain, and Portugal that ended the French and Indian War and the Seven Years' War. France ceded all of their land in North America except for a few island, such as the Antilles in the Caribbean and Saint Pierre and Miquelon near Canada. These islands were highly profitable due to their sugar plantations, and France felt little attachment to the rest of Canada. In exchange, they regained control of Guadeloupe and Martinique, two other profitable sugar islands. Great Britain was granted all land east of the Mississippi River. Spain gave Florida to Great Britain in return for the Philippines and Cuba. Spain also received the Louisiana colony from France. The British were apprehensive about having a large number of Roman Catholics in British-controlled Canada, but did not wish to aggravate tensions by deporting them. The treaty resulted in Spain and Great Britain claiming most of North America.
