The first mention of manifest destiny, the widely-held American belief that the country was destined to spread their "empire of liberty" from one side of the continent to the other. The phrase was mentioned in John O'Sullivan's newspaper "The New York Morning News." This ideology was accepted by many an American and served as a primary reason for westward expansion.
