aug 23, 1831 - Nat Turner's Rebellion
Description:
Also known as the Southampton Insurrection. Black preacher Nat Turner organized the most successful slave revolt in American history, consisting of 80 followers that attacked and killed about 60 people, most being white. The Southampton militia quelled the rebellion, and Turner was hanged. It inspired retaliation against innocent slaves in the rest of the South, which was already uncomfortable with the prospect of large-scale slave revolts.
